I'm no longer a teenager but I very much enjoy the feeling of having a crush. It is AMAZING. You blush all the time, you smile more often and most of the time, you catch yourself singing love songs. It's funny when you realize that your crush is giving you pterodactyls without him even knowing it.
Based on my observation (and I don't know an explanation for this), when someone sees his/her crush, an "ultra sugar rush" effect occurs. That person becomes giggly, giddy and (hello, Giulia) talkative. Most of us, especially girls, do not want our crush to noticed that we like him/her. How should we act in order to appear nonchalant?
1.) Tell yourself beforehand to be calm if ever he/she appears.
By doing so, you allow yourself to keep your emotions in check. Take deep breaths and smile to keep your heart from racing so fast and to avoid all the adrenaline rush that can be caused by his/her presence.
2.) Treat him like an ordinary friend.
Don't avoid him. You'll only make things awkward for both of you. Interact with him like how you would do with common friends. Avoiding him would only make him think "Is there something here?"
3.) Refrain from whispering with friends when he/she is around.
Girls are more guilty of this. Yes, girls. This also involves all the giggling and looking his way. Doing these things simply cause the "crush alarm" to go "active mode". :)
4.) If he's around, be busy with something.
Doing something while he's around can distract you from doing things caused by the "ultra sugar rush" effect. Plus, he'll be more interested with someone who does not throw secret glances at him most of the time.
5.) Talk to him.
This is my favorite thing to do. This is one of the most effective ways to break the ice between you and your crush. Be interested with what he's saying and be a good listener. Knowing him better will lessen the awkwardness between you and him. (Another advantage: he may get to spend more time with you if he realizes that you're someone he can talk to any time. :) )
Having crushes is fun. Enjoy it in the right way by saying "bye bye" to the "awkward-oh-my-gosh-he-needs-to-notice-me" moments caused by the "ultra sugar rush" effect. ;)
